The saxophone was invented by Adolphe Sax around 1840. Although it is classed as a woodwind because of its single-reed mouthpiece, it is generally made of brass. The sax was first shown to the public in Brussels in 1841. Saxophone players are called saxophonists.
Saxophones are popular with big dance bands and military bands. The saxophone is also a delightful solo instrument and is used extensively by jazz solo artists and varied ensembles. Common big band arrangements call for one or two tenor saxes, two altos, a baritone and perhaps a bass. The soprano saxophone is usually integrated as a special solo instrument for effect.
It appears that Sax wanted to create an instrument that would have somewhat of a woodwind sound with the power of a brass instrument. This he succeeded in doing. The varied tones of soprano, alto, tenor, baritone and even bass saxes are pleasing, full and melodic, providing great pleasure to both players and listeners.
